Growing your own herbs can be a relatively inexpensive exercise.  Herb gardens do not require a lot of space, and with a sunny location (outside or inside your house or apartment), an herb garden can actually grow all year.

3.  Harvest your herbs as they are ready and sell them at your local farmer’s market
4.  Harvest and dry the herbs.  Sell them online, at the local farmers market, or local specialty grocer.

How to Make Money: Create & Sell Unique Kid’s Clothes

SpunkyStork.comRecently listening to the PT Money podcast, I was introduced to Aliya Jiwa, the owner of a unique children’s clothing company called, Spunky Stork. Aliya’s encouraging story is one to share with those of us who are very interested in starting our own businesses, and we are not exactly sure where to begin.

For Aliya, her international journey had taken her overseas right after graduate school to work at a job that never materialized.  After a few months, she moved back to the states and started to work and complete many freelance jobs just to pay her expenses.  Life was not how she had planned it to be.

Now on the other side, Aliya operates SpunkyStork.com, a successful children’s clothing business operating from the kitchen of her New York City apartment.

I am amazed to hear the instances similar to Aliya’s when new business owners and entrepreneurs literally seem to stumble into their suite spot of business.  For Aliya, she had been attending a local street fair in the city one weekend.  She noticed the many exhibit booth vendors with little to no traffic.  One particular vendor caught her attention as well as the attention of most other fair goers.  The small, unassuming structure was surrounded by a large group of people, engaged with the seller and his silk-screened children’s clothes.  Aliya had to check it out and was surprised to see the vendor was simply selling onesies and tees for babies and toddlers.

The idea noodled within Aliya’s mind.  She was sure she could do that, too.  Following that weekend fair event, Aliya performed her own due diligence of production and market research.  Fast forward a few months, Spunky Stork launched with specialized production in creating and selling organic, “green” onesies and tees for babies and toddlers.

Aliya has no children of her own.  She simply witnessed the market’s demand during the street fair, researched how she could fill that need with a unique product (i.e. organic/green), and then she worked it.  Literally, she pounded the pavement, introducing Spunky Stork to key children clothing boutiques in various US cities as well as building relationships with mom-blog networks.

Now, this one-woman show is operating her own business and generating between $4,000 to $16,000 per month.

My takeaway:
We must remain aware of your surroundings in the event our future home-based business idea could be right in front of you and drawing an audience of buyers today.  What are you seeing today?

How to Make Money: 2013 Personal Goal – Earn $10,000 per Month

1.  My putting my goal in public view will get myself in gear and start moving forward
2.  Your reading about my journey will motivate you to exercise the same

A BRIEF BACK STORY
I recently read that success is achieved when you have given thought to determine what needs done.  Ok, so I agree.  There can be no success without a goal.  Simply, there is nothing to measure when there is no goal.  For me, an undefined  goal or even deadline easily creates a life of busy-ness that heads in no specific direction. The goal needs to recognize that future point in time that I can place all my energy and effort and work toward.

So, I must figure out:
What’s my goal?  What do I want to achieve
How in the world do I plan to get there.

My wishing upon a star is not going to create a life of wealth, and I am speaking more than finances here.

  • Columbus dreamed of an unknown world
  • Henry Ford aimed for the day of a horseless carriage
  • Thomas Edison visualized a lamp lit by electricity
  • The Wright brothers believed a machine could fly through the air
Ok, so here goes…my public announcement for you all to read and then to hold me accountable….[insert deep breath here]:
MY GOAL
In 2013, I want to be earning $10,000 per month (on average) from a side business that includes freelance work integrated with passive online business revenue.

This $10,000 more per month will hopefully prove a few things:
1.  My ability to uncover freelance and internet work that provides a 2nd income from my family
2.  My skill in growing the side business in such a way that I can eventually make a choice to pursue the side business full time.

You may remember, I already have a full-time job that I really do enjoy.  This full-time work currently provides for my family.  In 2013, I simply desire to have a more flexible schedule.

My dad died in September 2012, and I realized an even stronger desire for my growing family to have more time near our extended families that currently live 12 hours apart.  So rather than choosing to move from our home and city that my family really enjoys, I want to first determine whether I can easily create a flexible work model that will permit extended times with our families during the year.

 

MY EXERCISE:
1.  My specific goal:  ”By August 29, 2013, I want to earn $10,000 per month, every month.”
2.  My proposed revenue plan:

$5,000     5 clients; each paying $1000/month retainer for my servicess
$3,000     Buy & sell broker on Ebay & Amazon
$2,000     Affiliate & product sales from HomeGigz.com

Of course, I will monitor and update the above revenue plan as I move into the year and share the actual revenue generated from the various work.


MY NEXT STEPS:
I have written down the goal and revenue plan on a piece of paper and intend to review it multiple times every day beginning today.  As I am praying about this goal & direction as well as meditating on the likelihood of it occurring,  I want to get to the point that I can mentally see myself having already completed the goal.  Simply, I want to visualize it to the point that as I work to make it happen, with our Lord’s blessing – it actually begins to happen.

And no, I am not promoting the “name it & claim it” mentality.  For me – I have found that if I can mentally get myself to the point where I confidently see my goal achieved, I have a strong possibility of it actually happening.

So, here goes.  Hold me accountable.  Check back for updates and nudge me with questions as my work begins.

10 Ways to Make MoneyWorking to discover ways to make money, I offer up these 10 ideas that when efficiently done may potentially earn you some extra money this time next week.  Please take a moment to review the list and let me know your thoughts.  What are some other ways that come to mind that can help someone looking to make a little extra money this week?

1.  Hold a Yard Sale
“One man’s trash is another man’s treasure.”  A yard sale is a quick way to make money while you remove excess clutter from your life.

2.  Host a community sales with themed-product
Think “Consignment Sale with Focus”.  Connect with potential sellers of their products (i.e. Computers, baby items, etc.) and offer to host the sale (providing advertising, etc). Sellers simply bring in their products, you check them in and then collect proceeds off every dollar sold during the 2-3 day sales event.

3.  Sell clothes to thrift shops.
While you’re at it, offer to help your friends as well for a small commission on any item sold.  They’ll surely appreciate your doing the legwork to sell their unwanted clothes.

4.  Apply to work part-time at a local temp agency
This is one of the most overlooked opportunities.  Check out your local temporary employment agency for a listing of temporary & part-time jobs that you just be the perfect fit.

5.  List your unwanted books & CDs on Ebay.com or Amazon.com 
Yes, people STILL physical books & CDs.  You may even want to consider approaching your local used bookstores to determine what they may be willing to offer you for your collectible items.

6.  Sell your other unwanted items on Ebay.com or Craigslist.org
Craigslist.org has become a great resource for my family.  During a recent “lemon” vehicle purchase, I was able to sell the soured purchase on Craigslist.com in literally 30 minutes.  The new owners/mechanics were able to fix the issues in order to turn the lemon into lemonade, and I was able to reinvest the proceeds into another vehicle of my choice.

7.  Sell discounted or wholesale products on Ebay.com (Overstock.com; Wholesalecentral.com)
Though I have not tried this yet, I am definitely looking into some product options that I can purchase at a great discount/wholesale price and then resale them on Ebay or even Craigslist.  Ideally, I am exploring how I may simply broker the sale and have the products actually drop-shipped to the buyer.  Then, I will not have to physically touch the products.  Win-Win, I think…will keep you posted.

8.  Offer a service on Fiverr.com
There are so many services on Fiverr.com, you will definitely need to be very specific in your service offering in order to gain prospective buyers’ attentions

9.  Offer a recycling service to a specific area of town.
Focus on a specific neighborhood, so you may easily route your pick up/delivery in the most efficient way.

10.  Sell your plasma.
I have a friend whose husband had actually saved his “plasma” money that he used to purchase her engagement ring when they were in college together.  So – yes, it’s definitely a way to make money.

Though work is not a new concept, the way I respond to work makes a huge impact in the way I live and enjoy the life I have today.  There can be a golden opportunity in your discovering work that you enjoy.
